Published on Wednesday, August 24 by editor

With the series evenly poised, and excitement reaching fever pitch, we turn our attention to Thursday’s 4th Test. The bookies still make the Australians favourites, but only just.

If you’re thinking about having a punt on the action at Trent Bridge, then take a look at the spread betting markets provided by Sporting Index. They’re offering £100 cash to all new clients** (details below), as well as a variety of Ashes promotions for existing account holders**. Here are our thoughts ahead of the next Test, to help you get started:

Swingers Party

Australia go into the fourth Test at Trent Bridge as favourites once again; however, the difference between these two teams is smaller than ever. The visitors are expected to strengthen their side, with Gillespie set to be replaced by either Tait or Kasprowicz.

England are unchanged, and go into this game full of confidence after another fine performance at Old Trafford. Good use of reverse swing by Flintoff and Jones has baffled the Aussies’ left-handed batsmen. Gilchrist, Hayden and Katich have been restricted to few runs so far, but they could find it easier going at Trent Bridge because the wicket favours more traditional bowling styles.

Trent Bridge is very flat, and regarded as a run-friendly ground. Sporting Index are expecting both sides to score in the high 300’s per innings, and are even predicting that Australia will break into the 400’s. If England’s series run rate of 4.01 (compared to the visitor’s 3.87) continues, then you’d expect to see plenty of punters betting ‘high’ on both the teams and individual batsmen’s runs markets. For example, Vaughan has notched up 212 runs so far - Sporting Index predict he’ll get 355 to 365 by the end of the 5th Test.

The pitch is generally conducive to conventional swing bowling, which should suit Hoggard’s style, so he’s one to watch. Of the English batsmen on show, Pietersen will be very familiar with Trent Bridge from his Nottinghamshire days. For the Aussies, Ponting looks to be coming in to form just at the right time, after an impressive display at Old Trafford.
