News: Champions League Spread Betting Preview
Published on Friday, February 25 by editor

The Champions League Second Round kicks off this week, and spread betting bookies Sporting Index are gearing up for some big bets. We spoke to their Senior European Football Market Maker for his opinion on what’s likely to happen.

“We’ve priced up AC Milan as the favourites to win the tournament, although their price has lengthened lately due to Man Utd’s recent good form. Alongside Chelsea they have the strongest squad in the competition. Playmakers Pirlo and Kaka have been particularly impressive this season, and the understanding they have with Shevchenko is a major reason why AC topped Group F ahead of Barca. Man Utd supporters will be grateful that the Ukranian won’t be playing at Old Trafford on Wednesday due to injury. On top of that, Milan are always a hard side to break down and their back four is the best in the competition; even Jaap Stam has to settle for a place on the bench.

“The winner of the Chelsea v Barcelona match up would be the other obvious choice to go all the way. It’s going to be a tough tie to call, Chelsea have key players injured and Barca’s recent form has dipped ever so slightly. Although the Blues will be bolstered by the return of Terry, I fancy the Spanish team to edge it because of their attacking quality. For me, Eto’o is the player to watch; he’s in top form.

“Looking at the other English teams still involved, I can only see Arsenal progressing to the quarters. I wouldn’t be surprised to see sharp punters bet ‘high’ on their current price. They should have too much quality for Bayern, but their squad lacks the depth required to go all the way. If you’re looking for a dark horse at a decent price, then my money would be on Leverkusen. They’re unlikely to win the competition, but I do expect them to beat Liverpool. They are in good form in the Bundesliga, and have scored in every away match in the tournament so far. Having already beaten Real, they face an inconsistent Liverpool who will be missing Gerrard (suspended) for the first leg.”
